LifeVest recently held its first virtual “potluck” featuring users’ favorite healthy recipe renovations! From veggie-filled sides to revamped casseroles to an array of convenient, make-ahead Crock-Pot meals, we received a hearty round of recipes to now display at our virtual table. Link Love: Healthy Thanksgiving Recipes

4,500 – The average number of calories eaten per American on Thanksgiving.

This whopping number makes us feel that as a nation, we’re not giving nearly enough thanks to our bodies. Even with exercise to the rescue, that splurge would take a 155-pound person six hours of running to burn it all off. If you’re taking a slow jog around the track, make that ten hours.

Rather than take on that fitness feat, this year we’re making a commitment to give thanks to our health. Join us as we celebrate Thanksgiving both by practicing moderation, and also by revamping some of our favorite holiday dishes. The menu below allows you to dig into many of the classics with a slightly healthier spoon, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie included.

Choose one or two to bring to your celebratory table, and then allow yourself to enjoy what else is offered. Just be mindful not to go too overboard so you can walk away feeling energized and thankful (rather than passed out on the couch!).

Fall has fallen upon us, which means sweater, sweet potato, and soup season have all officially arrived! We love all three, especially that latter one, which we encourage you to add into your eat-clean-toolbox.

With the temps cooling down, it’s easy to slide away from light summer fare into heavier winter territory. However, jumbo sweaters are no excuse to add another layer to your diet or your tummy. Luckily with an arsenal of soup recipes on-hand, you can stay warm and satisfied without needing to take that path.

This particular recipe from our food blogging LifeVester Grace calls on an array of hearty harvest veggies to create a soup that’s both robust, yet light. That’s exactly the combination we recommend employing to stay slimming down and feeling good all throughout the season.

The following easy-to-make recipe comes from LifeVester Angela Delgado, and offers a much lighter alternative to your traditional plate of pasta. Since Angela discovered zucchini could be turned into noodles a few months ago, she’s been making it every single week!

“It tricks me into thinking I’m eating pasta, which I’ve always been addicted to,” she says. “It’s really quick and has simple flavors that all come together to create a really fresh dish.”

With less than half the calories of regular pasta, and a whole lot of vitamin C and other nutrients, this is one pasta where building a healthy addiction would be well-warranted! Serve it up as a light meal or alongside a slice of whole grain bread and a salad.

The LifeVest office has been eating well lately, and we want you to join in with us!

For our last company lunch, our food blogger and LifeVester Grace brought us these Tofu Banh Mi Collards Wraps. Banh mi is a traditional Vietnamese sandwich, generally filled with some type of protein, and layered with cucumbers, cilantro, pickled carrots, and sometimes various other veggies. In its translation, the word “Banh mi” actually means loaf, or slice of bread, so generally, you’ll find all of those ingredients encompassed by an airy baguette. Grace’s version, however, is obviously a bit different — and healthier, too!

Tailgating: The NFL Season Game-plan for Your Health

Tailgating – let’s not make it a gateway for sitting on your sofa and growing your tail.

Instead, let’s make it a social celebration that can actually give benefit to your body. The NFL’s 2014-2015 season got underway last Thursday, also kicking off the season for one of our favorite activities – fall tailgating. However, fill it with too many six-packs (unless referring to the abdominal variety), and too much pizza (unless referring to these 8 versions), and it can quickly become one of our tail’s – er, booty’s – worst nightmares.

Instead, follow our LifeVest guide to tailgating this season so you can fill up on fun without letting your weight rival that of your favorite NFL linebacker. Below, find a game-plan that’ll coach you off the couch from time to time, while also letting chow down on some of your favorite celebratory food. Meatless Monday: Ratatouille with Summer Herb Corn

Summer ratatouille

When summer produce reaches its prime, we’re all about packing it all together in a bowl and calling it dinner. This naturally generates a meal that’s simple, healthy, and never fails to be full of flavor. Ratatouille is the classic definition of that.

A traditional French dish, ratatouille consists of vegetables stewed together so that their flavors meld. It’s generally composed of zucchini, tomatoes, eggplant, onions and peppers, all items that meet together around the same month of the year in the garden. For today’s Meatless Monday version, our LifeVester Grace at FoodFitnessFreshAir calls upon one other summer veggie to add to that mix – corn – for a mildly sweet and crunchy topping.

As Grace says:

“When veggies are fresh and local, you really needn’t do much to them but put them together and let their flavors swim free. Ready in 45 minutes or less (depending on your grain choice), this recipe lends itself well to a weeknight meal that’ll leave you feeling great. Pair with a side of protein, or sprinkle some toasted walnuts on top and call it a meal.”
