Your average slice packs in more fat, sodium and refined “bad” carbs than can ever be claimed healthy. Enter the deep dish arena and you run the risk of piling 770 calories onto your plate in just one slice. Yikes!
Luckily, pizza has the potential to be an award-winning meal if you power it up with the right ingredients and give its crust some care. In fact, it presents the perfect platform to load up on summer veggies, which you’ll see in many of the recipes included below. Let your mood and your meal help you choose which to try first!
8 recipes to power up your pizza:
The Farmer’s Market on a Slice: Carrot and Kale Farm Pizza
A creamy carrot sauce starts this off, and from there the caramelized veggies just keep piling up for a pie full of flavor. A little Parm. tops it off to seal one of the freshest pizzas you’ll probably eat all year.
The Lunch in 15 Minutes or Less: Greek Pita Pizza
We love the Greek-inspired combination of veggies that top this quick-to-come-together pizza. We plan to start here, but are dreaming up other variations too so we can turn pita into pizza, and lunch, every week.
The Don’t Make Me Stop at 2 Slices: Margherita Pizza with Cauliflower Crust
A vegetable crust?! Don’t hack it till you try it. Just as cheesy and saucy as your traditional ‘za, this is a no-guilt pie that you won’t need to think twice about going in for seconds. Or maybe even thirds.
The Protein Punch: Socca Pizza with Pesto and Kale
Socca is a thin, flatbread-like base that’s derived from chickpea flour. It creates a protein & fiber packed dough that’s super easy to make and addictively delicious. This one gets topped with a vegan pesto and enough greens to make us scream “yes please!”.
The Pizza-for-Breakfast: Avocado & Egg Pizza
You’ll never want to wake up to cold slices from a pie you ordered the night before when you have this quick recipe on hand. We love these English Muffin & Egg Pizzas, too!

The Serve Me at a Dinner Party: Quinoa Pizza with Meyer Lemon and Goat Cheese
This 3-ingredient crust packs in a ton of nutrients, and is topped with quality ingredients to make for the perfect elegant and light dinner party appetizer.
The Saturday afternoon project: The Classic with Whole Wheat and Flaxseed Crust
For a classic doughy slice that warrants a weekly spot on your dinner table, try this DIY wheat crust. The knead-time is worth it, and will give a little boost to your triceps, too.
The Better Than Pizza Roll Snack: Zucchini Pizza Bites
We’d give frozen Pizza Rolls an F according to our snack smart grading list. The Zucchini Pizza Bites, on the other hand, get an A+ for being super light and every bit as delicious.
